Lyon Arboretum and Botanical Garden is a treasure located deep in the heart of Manoa Valley.
Its website says it’s “the only university botanical garden located in a tropical rainforest in the United States as well as the only easily accessible tropical rainforest on the island of O‘ahu.”
You’ll pass a bunch of little cottages and greenhouses the UH uses for research and community education about “plants and the natural environments of Hawai‘i.”
The parking is ample. Drop by the visitor center first. Make a small donation, if you wish, and pick up a map. I’ve learned to slather bug repellent over exposed skin– it’s either that or become lunch for swarms of mosquitos.
It’s worth it.
I found yellow lehua this time around.
And the tiny “ilima.
Eye popping rhododendrons.
And a sense of peace.
The beauty of the place soaks into your bones, calms your brain, lifts up your heart.
Take some time off from world and go.
The rainforest awaits you.
