Driving around somewhere in Hawaii Kai, I see these huge pink hibiscus. They’re as big as my head. No, really, they are. So naturally, I come to a screeching halt and jump out of the car. (Doesn’t everyone do that?)
“May I take pictures of your hibiscus?” I ask the nice-looking homeowner.
“Sure,” he says. “In fact, come see my garden. I have orchids.”
Addict, meet crack.
Of course I follow him inside the white wooden gate.
The first thing I hear is the splashing tinkle of running water. The first thing I see is a riot of lily pads and a slow-moving school of koi. Big ones. I think they were posing for me.
I’m hooked before we even make it to the back yard. We walk along the side of the house. He and his lovely wife have a little tropical jungle thing going on. They’ve even got bananas.
We turn the corner and this is what greets us.
And they have this bowl o’ cacti.
And this. Succulents decorated with diamond-like dew.
I fully expect t visit my new friends again.
